Yasoram Plan Drawing Competition for School Students

Since the year 1992 YRCT has been conducting a plan drawing competition for school students. The students are asked to put down on a paper provided by the trust of their idea of their dream house. Students from class one to higher school all over Kerala participate in the competition.

A month before the competition the floor area specification of the building is set, invitation are sent to school and advertisements published in leading news papers. Students are free to consult their parents, architects or engineers to prepare for the competition. However they are allowed to bring with them only drawing tools and ideas in their mind on the day of the competition. Papers for drawing at the time of competition are provided by the trust. Most of the drawing is exceptionally good with some students even painting them. As per the competition rules, the students must draw the plan and elevation taking into consideration optimal space utilization, cross ventilation, aesthetics etc. Taking a break from conventional houses many participants try out off-beat shapes for houses including pentagonal and hexagonal. They are given three hours to complete the drawing.

While younger students use just a scale, pencil, divider and eraser, some older students bring T-scales, drawing boards, rotring isographic pen and other instruments to make their work error proof. The participants have to draw while sitting on the floor. Over the years we have assessed that even small children have the idea of their dream home.
The competition offers students an opportunity to have an experience of the construction industry at a very early age.

First, Second & Third prices are awarded to three students each in Lower Primary, Upper Primary & High School category. The toppers’ schools are also awarded trophies. All the participating students are awarded consolation prices.
